Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
