Powerful winds attaining speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 households experiencing outages and compelled officials to halt over 100 aircraft departures, based on domestic outlets.

The gales are impacting the whole South Island and lower areas of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have announced infrequent high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in core zones including Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and prepare for more power and communication outages.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the southern region, though agencies state that the electricity supply was being slowly brought back.

Local media have reported that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gusts.

In Wellington, a person was lost his life after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Flights to and from the metropolis have been halted as a result of the weather, while various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to facilitate emergency management operations.

Labor Protests Alongside Severe Conditions

The powerful gales on today occur while many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are engaged in what has been termed a "mega strike", calling for better pay and working conditions.

Yet the severe conditions has pressured them to change various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Similar gusts are affecting Australia, causing a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have issued flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding forest fires.
