The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
