Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Considering a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might appear unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to execute Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could assist the team access areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Planners groups.

Viewers can expect learning which adventurers will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
