A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
